Robert Hampson
Robert Hampson’s musical career really started in the mid 1980’s with the band LOOP. He had previously worked on more experimental music, with his 4-track tape machine, but wanted to try the dynamics of very loud guitar based music. After the end of LOOP in 1990, he returned to more experimental styles, with the guitar still as the central figure with MAIN. His musical partner, Scott Dowson, was also in LOOP and a guitar player. After many experimentations with the central themes of guitar-based atmospheres and soundscapes, and the departure of Dowson, the more concrete and acousmatic based sounds that had been in the background, became more of the central focus in MAIN. Hampson eventually abandoned the guitar altogether, feeling he had reached a point where he had explored all possibilities of it.
